If there’s one thing that can make or break a business it’s team motivation. Find out six ways to give your team a boost and help them be the best they can be.

As a business owner, employees are your most lucrative resource, but if team motivation is low, you’re unlikely to see the results you’re after.

While there’s no simple, overnight solution to motivating your team, there are some research-backed tips that can get you started. Here’s our round-up of five proven ways to keep your team motivated!

1. Communicate your company’s vision

First things first: It’s so important that your team know what they’re representing — and working towards — from the moment they join. After all, your team are there to keep the vision alive, so it’s important they’re informed of what that vision is in a clear and simple way. Keep your team inspired and motivated by informing them regularly of how the company’s vision is coming to life, and how they’ve contributed. Informal company meetings, individual department presentations and evening drinks with food and the chance to ask questions are all fun ways of keeping your employees informed and boosting team motivation.

2. Support your team

It may sound obvious, but supporting your team as much as you can will ensure they’re motivated to do the same for your business. Give opportunities for each team member to develop and test out new ideas and approaches, by making sure they have access to all training and development resources. Allowing your team to gain new skills while working for you will not only encourage them to stay motivated but will more than likely keep them around longer.

And it doesn’t have to cost a fortune, either! LinkedIn’s Slideshare, Google’s Digital Garage and Skillshare are all useful, inexpensive places to gain knowledge and training on a wide variety of topics.

3. Give feedback often

It’s important to tell your team when they’re doing a good job, but equally they also need to know when things aren’t working. Give thanks when a project is complete, and be sure to show your sincerest gratitude for the contribution everyone makes to the business, it will motivate your team to carry on!

Try setting an employee of the month scheme with vouchers for the winner, install a 360 feedback scheme and encourage all team members to email praise, often!

4. Set clear goals

Nothing says team motivation like working towards something. Setting clear goals for everyone to work towards will increase productivity. Make sure to check in with your team as they work towards their set goals and offer support should they need it.

5. Provide incentives

They don’t always have to be expensive but incentives are a great motivational booster. You can offer incentives such as gift cards, a paid day off, tickets to the theatre, or other low-cost ways to show your appreciation. Of course, if it’s within your budget, cash incentives are always a good idea.

6. Create a great working environment

It’s been proven that where you work has an effect on how motivated and productive you are. If your team are working in an uninspiring environment, maybe it’s time to switch it up. Try adding some colour and life to the office with plants and a fresh coat of paint. This is a great opportunity for you to create a beautiful environment to work, rest, have fun and boost your employees motivation levels.
